Wikkii
Wikkii was a British wiki farm running MediaWiki.
History[edit | edit source]
Wikkii was founded in January 2009. As it grew, it became evident that Wikkii could not support thousands of wikis. The site had poor access speed and occasional outages of varying timespans. In October 2012, a major site-wide outage affected every wiki on Wikkii except for those with their own custom domain.
New owners subsequently took over Wikkii. However, they failed to provide any substantial improvement in service and eventually abandoned the site. Pages on various Wikkii sites loaded very slowly, if at all. According to various Wikkii editors, the new owners did not responded to enquiries concerning Wikkii. An unofficial Wikkii Facebook page was created to collect any information on the issue,[1] as well as an additional Facebook thread being created to facilitate discussion.
Soon, creation of new accounts and wikis was locked, and loading alternative domains resulted in an plain-text "access denied" message. At this point, Wikkii hosted over 3,000 wikis. Sometime in 2014, Wikkii went defunct; the last known capture of it was made on June 25th.[2] The web archival service archive.today indicates that over 2,500 wikis hosted on Wikkii, 18 enhanced wiki sites on wikkii.net, and up to 94 individual page wikis on the wikkii.org incubator had been archived to some lesser or greater extent. wikkii.com now redirects to an e-commerce and web building site,[3] while wikkii.net has been claimed by spammers posing as the legitimate Wikkii.[4]
